What changes in each year

Year one: foundations

The first year is broad on purpose. Semester I carries 16 credits: Computer Fundamentals and Applications, Programming in C, Digital Logic, Mathematics-I, Professional Communication and Ethics, and a one-credit Hardware Workshop with two practical hours a week. Semester II adds another 16 credits with Discrete Structure, Microprocessor and Computer Architecture, OOP in Java, Mathematics-II, UX/UI Design and a one-credit course in the Principles of Management.

Notably, the first year already mixes programming, mathematics and design. If you treat only the coding subjects as real work, the mathematics and communication courses will quietly decide your SGPA.

Year two: the core computing subjects

Year two adds 34 credits and is where most students meet the subjects that define the degree. Semester III (17 credits) covers Data Structure and Algorithms, Database Management System, Web Technology-I, System Analysis and Design, Probability and Statistics, and Applied Economics. Semester IV (17 credits) covers Operating Systems, Software Engineering, Numerical Methods, Python Programming, Web Technology-II and Project-I, a two-credit course with four practical hours a week.

This is the year when labs become heavier in most courses, and it is also when Project-I gives you the first taste of building something end to end with a deadline attached.

Year three: depth, networks and the second project

Semester V is the heaviest term in the programme at 18 credits: Computer Network, Artificial Intelligence, Advance Java Programming, MIS and e-Business, Society and Technology, and Project-II with six practical hours a week. Semester VI adds 17 credits across Computer Graphics and animation, Mobile Programming, Cryptography and Network Security, Technical Writing, Distributed System and Project-III.

Two projects in one year is a real workload, so the third year rewards students who start early and keep project scope honest rather than ambitious.

Year four: electives, specialisation and internship

Semester VII carries 17 credits: Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking, Software Project Management, Financial Accounting, Project-IV, and the first two elective slots. Semester VIII is the lightest at 12 credits, with Cloud Computing, Internship, and the remaining two elective slots.

The elective slots are where the programme stops being one fixed path. Each elective slot is worth 3 credits and offers a choice from a published list, so the last two years are the best time to think about the direction you want after graduation.

Assessment weightings worth knowing before week one

A theory course is assessed with 20 per cent internal and 80 per cent external weightage. A course with lab work is split differently: 20 per cent internal, 20 per cent lab work and 60 per cent external. You must secure at least 40 per cent in each category, a minimum grade of C+ (GPA 2.3) in every course, and 80 per cent attendance in each course to sit the final examination.

Those four numbers explain most of the practical advice that follows in this series. Internal and lab marks are earned week by week, and attendance is a hard gate rather than a formality, so a semester planned around the last two weeks is a semester planned badly.
