BCA Fifth Semester: Subjects, Project-II and Study Plan
Semester V is the heaviest term in the degree at 18 credits, with Project-II at six practical hours a week. Here is how to plan it sensibly.
Semester V is the heaviest term in the BCA programme at 18 credits, and it arrives at the point when students are also starting to think about what comes after graduation. Five taught courses sit alongside Project-II, which carries 3 credits and six practical hours a week.
The load is real, but it is predictable. The semester is dominated by a network course, an artificial intelligence course, advanced Java, a management information systems course and a society-oriented course, plus the project. Planning around the project hours first is what makes the rest fit.

Four courses list three practical hours a week: Computer Network, Artificial Intelligence, Advance Java Programming and MIS and e-Business. Project-II lists six practical hours a week, which is the largest single practical allocation in the programme. Society and Technology carries two tutorial hours a week and no practical component.
Add the lab hours up and you get eighteen practical hours a week, on top of the taught hours for five courses. This is the semester where a weekly timetable stops being optional.
The shape of this semester
Three of these courses build on earlier semesters. Advance Java Programming follows on from OOP in Java, Computer Network introduces the subject that several later electives and the cyber security course depend on, and Artificial Intelligence is the first course in the programme with a strongly mathematical flavour since the second year.
MIS and e-Business is usually the least familiar, because it combines technology with organisational thinking, and Society and Technology is often mistaken for a light course. It is a 3-credit course with tutorial hours, and it carries the same minimum grade requirement as everything else.
Project-II: what changes from Project-I
Project-II carries 3 credits rather than 2, and six practical hours a week rather than four. In practice that means there is enough scheduled time to build something substantially more complete, and the expectation is that documentation, testing and a working demonstration all exist by the end of the term.
If Project-I taught you to narrow scope, Project-II is where you learn to sequence work. Split the project into pieces you can finish in one or two sessions each, keep a version you can demonstrate at any point, and do not leave integration until the final weeks. A workable study plan
- Weeks 1 to 2: enter every fixed commitment, including the six project hours and all four labs, into one calendar before anything else.
- Weeks 2 to 4: for Advance Java, spend the first sessions re-reading your earlier Java work. The advanced course depends on the fundamentals being solid.
- Weeks 3 to 8: for Artificial Intelligence, keep worked solutions alongside theory. Redo each method without notes before moving on.
- Weeks 4 to 10: for Computer Network, build a diagram of the concepts you cover as you go. Network material is easier to recall as a picture than as a list.
- Weeks 8 to 13: give Project-II a fixed weekly block and finish each block with something that works, not something half-built.
- Weeks 13 to 16: reduce new project features, revise taught courses, and run a full rehearsal of the demonstration.
Assignments, assessment and attendance
The assessment structure is unchanged. Theory courses carry 20 per cent internal and 80 per cent external weightage. Courses with lab work carry 20 per cent internal, 20 per cent lab work and 60 per cent external weightage. You must secure a minimum of 40 per cent in each category, a minimum grade of C+ (GPA 2.3) in every course, and 80 per cent attendance in each course to sit the final examination.
With six courses in the term, internal assessments cluster. Check the assessment schedule at the start of the semester and note any weeks where two subjects fall together, then move project work out of those weeks in advance rather than during them.
Keeping the whole semester balanced
- Protect the Project-II block. It is the easiest commitment to sacrifice to coursework and the hardest to recover.
- Treat Society and Technology as a normal 3-credit course, with its tutorial work done on time.
- Revise earlier Java and programming fundamentals before the advanced course assumes them.
- Keep one weekly slot with no fixed task, so that a clash or a delayed submission does not push everything else back.
- Review your attendance in every course at the midpoint of the semester, not at the end.
