BCA Eighth Semester: Cloud Computing, Electives and Internship

The eighth semester is the shortest of the programme on paper: 12 credits across four courses. In practice it is the semester that demands the most initiative, because three of those four things depend on arrangements you make yourself.

What the eighth semester contains

The published curriculum registers 12 credits in the eighth semester. That is the smallest load of the eight semesters, and the total for the whole programme is 130 credits.

Cloud Computing and both electives pair three lecture hours with three practical hours. The internship is a three-credit course with no lecture or practical hours printed in the curriculum, because your hours are spent with the host organisation rather than in the classroom.

BCA 451 Cloud Computing

A three-credit course with a weekly practical, and the only fixed taught course in the semester. Because it is the single theory paper of the term, it tends to get more attention than it needs while the internship gets too little. Keep the balance: a steady weekly routine is enough for one three-credit course.

If you have already used hosted services in your project work, this course is a chance to understand the decisions behind the tools rather than only the commands. BCA 452 Internship

The internship is a three-credit course in the final semester, and it is assessed as a course rather than treated as an optional extra. That means it needs a placement, a supervisor, a log of what you did, and a written submission. The two elective slots in this semester

BCA 453 and BCA 454 are the third and fourth elective slots. As with the earlier slots, the curriculum lists four options for each and the department teaches one. Each running option is a three-credit course with three lecture hours and three practical hours.

Because the slots run in the same term as the internship, think carefully about how much lab time you can realistically give them. A slot whose option you already know something about will cost you far less time than one you are starting from zero. The electives guide describes all sixteen options by slot.

Why the light semester is not light

Twelve credits is fewer than any other semester, which makes the term look easy on paper. In reality the internship consumes working days rather than class hours, and both electives still carry three practical hours a week. Students who treat the term as spare time usually meet the problem in the last month, when the internship report and the elective practicals fall due in the same fortnight.

Plan around the host organisation rather than around the college timetable. Once your placement days are fixed, build study blocks for Cloud Computing and the electives on the days you are actually on campus. If your placement is effectively full-time, ask your department early how coursework and attendance are expected to work alongside it, because the 80% attendance rule applies to the taught courses.

Keep the two electives distinct from the first week. They are separate three-credit courses with separate practical files and separate assessments, and merging them into one folder of work is a common reason for a missing submission at the end of the term. Use one folder per course and label everything with the course code.

Assessment in the final semester

The taught courses follow the standard pattern: a course with lab work carries 20% internal, 20% lab work and 60% external weightage, with a minimum of 40% required in each category and a minimum grade of C+ (GPA 2.3) in the course. The external paper has ten brief answer questions of one mark, six short answer questions of five marks, and two long answer questions of ten marks.

The internship is graded through its own internal process set by your department and supervisor, so ask for the assessment guidance in writing at the start rather than working it out in the last month.

A term plan that works

1. Before teaching begins, finalise the internship host organisation and get the arrangement confirmed in writing.
2. In week one, ask your department exactly which elective options are running and who coordinates the internship.
3. Keep a daily note of internship tasks. Reconstructing three months of work from memory never produces a good report.
4. Treat Cloud Computing as one weekly block rather than a subject to cram in the last fortnight.
5. Check your CGPA early using the GPA calculator, then confirm what you still need to finish the degree.

Finishing details students forget

• The maximum time to complete the BCA programme is 8 years. A student who does not finish within that period must re-join from the beginning through the full admission procedure, so outstanding courses from earlier semesters are more serious than they look.
• The internship report and the elective practicals often fall due in the same fortnight. Plan for that collision.
• Keep copies of every submission, including the internship log sheets.
• Confirm your final semester registration entries, including exact elective titles, before the deadline.
