Choosing Your BCA Electives: All 16 Options Explained
Four elective slots, four options each. This is what every option covers, who it suits, and how to choose without regretting it later.
Four elective courses are built into the BCA programme: Elective-I and Elective-II in the seventh semester, and Elective-III and Elective-IV in the eighth. Each is a three-credit course with three lecture hours and three practical hours.
The curriculum lists four options for every slot, and the department teaches one option per slot. That means your choice exists, but it is bounded by what your campus runs that year. This guide explains all sixteen options so you can plan before the decision is made for you.
How the slots work
Each slot is a separate course code: BCA 405 for Elective-I, BCA 406 for Elective-II, BCA 453 for Elective-III and BCA 454 for Elective-IV. Whatever option runs in that slot, the course carries three credits and the same practical hours.

Elective-I options
Machine Learning
An area built on mathematics and data. It suits students who are comfortable with the statistics and probability they met earlier in the programme, and who are willing to spend time cleaning and preparing data before anything interesting happens. Expect your practical hours to involve working with datasets rather than writing large applications.
E-Commerce
A business-facing course about buying and selling online. It suits students interested in how commercial systems work end to end, including payments, catalogues and customer journeys. If you have enjoyed the management and e-business side of the programme, this is a natural fit.
Database Administration
A practical, operations-oriented option for students who liked database work and want to go deeper into running systems rather than only querying them. It suits methodical people who enjoy configuration, backups, performance checks and troubleshooting.
Linux
A foundational systems option. It suits students who want more confidence on the command line and in server environments, and it pairs well with networking and cloud interests. Even if you never take it, the skills it covers appear in many other courses and jobs.
Elective-II options
Dotnet Technology
An application development option built on the Microsoft technology stack. It suits students who prefer a structured, tool-supported development environment and who want a second platform alongside Java or Python.
Business Intelligence
A reporting and analysis option focused on turning operational data into information that decision-makers can use. It suits students who like organising and interpreting information, and who are comfortable with both databases and business context.
Software Testing and Quality Assurance
A process option about verifying that software behaves as intended and about the practices that keep quality consistent. It suits patient, detail-minded students, and it pairs especially well with the project management and software engineering courses you have already taken.
Data Visualization
A communication option concerned with presenting data clearly and honestly. It suits students who enjoy the design side of computing and who want their analysis to be understood by people who are not analysts.
Elective-III options
Network Administration
The operations counterpart to the computer network course. It suits students who like infrastructure, configuration and problem-solving when systems misbehave, and it is a sensible pairing with security interests.
E-governance
A policy and systems option about the delivery of public services through digital channels. It suits students interested in how large organisations, particularly public ones, adopt technology, and in the practical problems that follow.
Database Programming
An option that goes further into writing logic inside and around a database. It suits students who want to build data-intensive applications and who already feel at home with database concepts and structured queries.
Geographical Information System
A specialised option dealing with spatial data: mapping, location and the analysis of information tied to places. It suits students interested in mapping, planning or environmental and municipal work, and it is one of the more distinctive options on the list.
Elective-IV options
Digital Marketing and SEO
A commercial option about being found and understood online. It suits students interested in the growth side of digital products rather than the engineering side, and who are happy writing, measuring and experimenting.
Image Processing
A mathematically inclined option about manipulating and analysing images. It suits students who enjoyed graphics, numerical methods and mathematics, and who want to work closer to the algorithms than to the interface.
Internet of Things
A hardware-adjacent option about connected devices and the systems that collect data from them. It suits students who liked the hardware workshop and networking material and who want to work with sensors, devices and the data they produce.
Data Mining and Data warehouse
The analytical counterpart to the business intelligence option, concerned with finding patterns in large collections of stored data. It suits students who enjoy statistics, databases and asking questions of data that no one has asked before.
How to choose well
- Find out which options your campus is actually running in each slot, and ask early enough to influence the answer.
- Decide what you want from the electives: two supporting your final project, one project and one exploration, or two broad skills for your first job.
- Read the elective subject description before choosing, and ask students one year ahead what the practical work was really like.
- Check the timetable. A slot that clashes with your project or internship hours will cost you more than a course you find slightly less interesting.
- Do not choose an option only because it is rumoured to be easy. Every elective is three credits with a practical, and the practical still has to be done.
