BCA Seventh Semester: Subjects, Project-IV and Electives

The seventh semester is the first term of your final year and the busiest one on paper. You register for six courses, two of which you choose yourself, and you begin the last project of the programme.

This guide sets out the courses in the semester, explains how the elective slots work, and suggests how to keep a three-credit project on track while four taught courses are running.

What the seventh semester contains

The published curriculum registers 17 credits in the seventh semester across six courses.

Four of the six courses pair three lecture hours with three practical hours. BCA 403 Financial Accounting is the smallest course at two credits with two lecture hours and no practical. BCA 404 Project-IV carries six practical hours and no lecture hours.

The fixed courses in outline

BCA 401 Cyber Security and Ethical Hacking

A three-credit course with a weekly practical. Security work is best learned by doing the lab exercises properly rather than copying output, because the external paper tests reasoning as much as recall. Keep your own notes on definitions and keep the lab environment consistent across weeks.

BCA 402 Software Project Management

This course and BCA 404 Project-IV reinforce each other. Planning methods, estimation and progress tracking are easier to remember when you are applying them to your own project in the same week. Deliberately use your project as the worked example for this course.

BCA 403 Financial Accounting

Two credits with no practical and no lab requirement, so the whole assessment rests on internal work and the external paper. It rewards regular short practice: solving a handful of problems every week is far more effective than reading a chapter repeatedly.

BCA 404 Project-IV

The final and largest project course, at three credits with six practical hours. It is also the work most likely to be discussed at an interview, so treat the documentation as a portfolio artefact rather than a submission requirement. How the Elective-I and Elective-II slots work

BCA 405 and BCA 406 are elective slots, not fixed subjects. The curriculum lists four options for each slot, and the department teaches one option per slot. Your campus decides which of the four runs, based on staff availability and demand, so the same slot can offer different content in different colleges.

A sensible way to choose is to pair the slots rather than treating them separately. One slot can support your Project-IV work, and the other can broaden a skill you have not yet covered. Avoid picking both slots for the same reason, unless your project genuinely needs both.

Using the two elective slots well

Because both slots sit in the same semester as Project-IV, the pairing matters more than either individual choice. A workable pattern is to let one slot feed your project while the other adds a genuinely new capability. If your project is data-heavy, an option that strengthens how you handle data will pay off in two places at once; a second option in an area you already know well will not.

The second consideration is workload rather than content. Each elective runs three lecture hours and three practical hours a week, the same footprint as any other lab course, so two electives add roughly six hours of contact time plus the practical work that follows each session. If you also have a long commute or a part-time job, account for that before choosing two demanding options.

Third, think about the term that comes after. The internship in the eighth semester is easier to arrange when you can point to a specific area you have studied, and elective choices are often the detail that decides which team takes you. Choose with the placement in mind rather than only with marks in mind.

Finally, ask students one year ahead of you. They can tell you how much practical work each option really involved, how the internal assessment was handled, and whether the timetable clashed with anything. That kind of information is worth more than a course description, and it is available for the price of a short conversation.

Assessment and examination in this semester

A course with lab work carries 20% internal, 20% lab work and 60% external weightage, and you must secure a minimum of 40% in each category plus a minimum grade of C+ (GPA 2.3). BCA 403, which has no practical, is assessed differently because there is no lab component to mark.

The external paper for a course with practical work has three groups: ten brief answer questions of one mark each, six short answer questions of five marks each, and two long answer questions of ten marks each. For a course without practical work the paper instead has eight short answer questions of five marks and three long answer questions of ten marks. Check which format applies to each course as you revise.

Planning the semester

1. Confirm your elective options in the first week and write the exact course titles on your registration form.
2. Fix your Project-IV scope before the third week, then freeze it. Expanding scope mid-semester is the most common reason final projects finish late.
3. Give the project two or three short slots a week instead of one long session. Progress is easier to demonstrate that way.
4. Keep BCA 402 coursework aligned with your project milestones so one effort serves both.
5. Reserve the last three weeks for revision and documentation, and do not plan new features then.
